His scholastic career was often driven by the needs of daily work with differing business realities, both domestic and foreign. He began his professional career as a lawyer involved in Portuguese textiles, particularly the clothing industry, with a strong export focus, which led to immediate contact with other European and American jurisdictions. As a result, the circle of clients widened to include shipyards, the distant fishing industry, the plastics industry, ceramics, etc.
In this way, business activity has always been present in the legal work carried out, which has allowed us to obtain an integrated view of our clients’ needs. In this way, university training was brought into line with the needs of the development of the legal profession.
We believe it is in this dichotomy between university education and professional experience, applied to various productive areas, and at the same time related to foreign legal systems, that the secret of our firm has lied since. Although it is a firm systematically committed to scholastic valorisation, on the constant path of knowledge, it is at the same time focused on the needs of the client – with a pragmatism arising from knowing what the business reality is and its difficulties, which brings us closer to our clients.
On the other hand, we endeavour to provide advice that is as comprehensive as possible, covering the widest and broadest range of hypotheses, encompassing the various branches of law. In general, any planning for foreign investment in Portugal, especially in a business production unit, must include a survey of tax needs and hypotheses, specifically in terms of tax benefits, as well as the issue of social security. This is especially true in terms of incentives for job creation and the benefits arising from this. We also see commercial, civil and labour issues, and it is this integration that we believe adds value to our clients. In addition, there is – and always has been – a strong judicial litigation component. For example, there is an accumulated credit of more than 30 years’ judicial litigation in specialised courts, such as the administrative and tax courts, as well as in arbitration.
